Oakland: Fascists in North Oakland/Temescal

Re-post from Indybay, where it has since been deleted. While certain elements may be overconfidently definitive, or simply unsubstantiated, we feel it warrants dissemination regardless. It is especially important within the context of a similar case in a different neighborhood nearby.

We personally began to see an SS tag start appearing in Berkeley and North Oakland at the beginning of the Ferguson rebellion in Nov.-Dec 2014. Since then, they have appeared consistently along Telegraph Avenue in various locations. The tag in question consists of an SS symbol with an upside down cross hanging above it. While this may have some association with the white metal scene, we consider it a fascist symbol and considers the taggers to be fascists as well.

For months we have been hearing about nazis creeping around Oakland and over enough time it became clear they were concentrating in one particular house. We have witnessed metal fans wearing Burzum and Death in June shirts in various parts of Oakland, and the acceptance of these small acts is tantamount to tolerating fascism. Burzum and Death in June are bands led by over fascists. We have no interest in listening to any justifications. Anyone who crosses the line into endorsing a fascist band by wearing their shirt or listening to their music will now be considered a fascist.

Recently, a fascist symbol was tagged on the walls of the Omni Commons in the Temescal district. Although the staff of the Omni was warned, they did not remove the fascist symbol. We have now removed all the nazi graffiti we could find in the area. We are releasing the location of the nazi house so that any interested parties can direct their concerns to the nazis in question.

The house in questions resides at {Redacted} Telegraph Avenue {Redacted}. The house is squatted and should be in the hands of those dispossessed by gentrification in North Oakland, not imported nazis.

We are unsure why nazis would be trying to creep into Oakland, but they will be easily stopped. This is the wrong place for them to make any moves.

DEATH TO FASCISM!

Fascist Presence in Ghost Town, West Oakland

NOTE: The following article was originally discarded by it’s authors, but with the recent publishing of the fascist street presence only blocks away, we feel that it should be released to the public. As Oakland continues to gentrify, we fear this will happen more and will likely escalate far beyond a few stickers and tags.

In early May of 2014, a peculiar sight was seen in West Oakland. Some graffiti scrawled on an electrical box proclaiming the words “ANTIFA ZONE” had been X’d out. Graffiti beef of course is hardly unfamiliar but what is alarming is the possibility that there was pro-fascist graffiti in a neighborhood that is still predominantly black. A block away from this electrical box, a sticker of the antifascist flag in a circle with the words “Antifaschistische Aktion” was scribbled over. Nevertheless, within a few days, the unknown antifascist vandal had repaired their tag on the box, and a new sticker covered the old one.

There are several theories could explain why “ANTIFA ZONE” was crossed out, as anyone unfamiliar with the term antifa might resent someone besides themselves proclaiming an “zone” in their neighborhood. But the sticker gave a few more clues, in that anyone who was unfamiliar with the term antifa would likely not recognize the flag logo. All graffiti and stickers that surrounded these two incidents were untouched as well, making it clear it was not a general anti-vandalism statement. With the ever-expanding gentrification of West Oakland, it couldn’t be long until some sort of white nationalist moved in.

But all was quiet until a few weeks later, “ANTIFA ZONE” on the electrical box, located at 35th & Market St, was crossed out again. After this, a couple of local antifascists mobilized with a small patrol, talking to other residents about what was happening. Hundreds of flyers explaining the situation (pictured below) were distributed and many more stickers with anti-fascist messages were put up. Most people who heard about it were quite shocked that something like that could happen in West Oakland, some offered to help distribute flyers and stickers.

Weeks later, it once again became clear that whoever was behind this was not backing down. More and more stickers were scrapped off, antifascist ones specifically targeted, between 35th & West and 34th & Chestnut. If there was any further doubt on where this person stood politically, that it was a misunderstanding, it disappeared when a sticker that had said “No Nazis” was scribbled out to read simply “Nazis.” “Good Night White Pride” stickers were scrapped off to read only the second half.

Local antifascists tried to use the stickers to track the movement of the person tearing them down, but it was not easy, and for the most part, stopped between 34th and 35th and San Pablo. Stickers at those intersections could last a day or two, and at any of the surrounding intersections, they lasted several days, sometimes weeks. Stay vigilant, tell your friends, and if you encounter this person(s), act accordingly.

Bay Area Anti-fascists Send Solidarity To Greece

kpOn September 18th local antifas marked the first anniversary since the murder of Killah P (stage name of Pavlos Fyssas) in Greece. He was attacked by a group of Golden Dawn members, a Greek fascist party, and was stabbed to death. Watching over the events, the police made no effort to intervene, the close ties between Golden Dawn and the Greek police never more obvious. More background on the murder can be read here.

This, of course, is not an isolated incident. Just one of countless lives stolen by the forces of fascism and white supremacy all over the globe. Whether it is at the hands of a neo-nazi, a police officer, or neighborhood watch vigilante, they are all manifestations of the same force.

Pavlos, and all the other stolen lives, live on in our hearts.

Right Sector’s Borislav Bereza Visits San Francisco

Saturday night, the 30th, an event was held in downtown San Francisco where people were invited to discuss the Ukrainian fascist group “Right Sector” with it’s very own press secretary, Borislav Bereza.

The event was small, not more than 20 people in attendance, but it is nonetheless troubling that such a relatively high-ranking member of Right Sector could feel comfortable showing his face in this city. The event itself was entirely in Russian with no translation available, so very little information was gleaned from it, however we find some consolation in their self-marginalization via language barriers.

This emergence of Right Sector in the United States is unfortunately not the first. So far this summer, Right Sector has hosted meet ups in multiple cities on the east coast (local antifas can email us for more info, if we haven’t contacted you already) and even held a demonstration in New York City.

Due to the short notice we had of the event being held, we were not prepared to fully disrupt it, however it was infiltrated and a comrade managed to briefly interrupted them before leaving.

Next time, they will think twice before organizing publicly or at all.

Antifa Patrol 3/22

Saturday night, Bay Area Antifa conducted it’s first patrol, in the mid-Market area of San Francisco. There have been reports of neo-nazis frequenting the area, though the patrol didn’t encounter any. Nevertheless, the area was decorated with anti-fascist stickers and painted slogans to greet the neo-nazis next time they venture outside.

Saturday was also the International Day Against Fascism and Racism, with many demonstrations and actions taking place worldwide.
